The Newport Jazz Festival returns this August as it celebrates its 70th anniversary. On April 9, the festival announced its line-up for the three day event, which takes place at Fort Adams State Park in Newport, RI.
Headliners for the festival include André 3000, Nile Rodgers and CHIC, Kamasi Washington and Elvis Costello. Over 40 artists are set to perform at the iconic music festival.
The Newport Jazz Festival goes as far as to call itself "the granddaddy of all music festivals." It is widely considered a "must attend" festival by jazz lovers, and typically brings in around 10,000 attendees. Given the Newport Jazz Festival's wide acclaim, tickets for the event tend to sell out quickly.
The Newport Jazz Festival began in 1954, established by Elaine Lorillard and her husband, Louis. Stars like Billie Holiday and Ella Fitzgerald have taken the stage at the festival, showcasing that the Newport Jazz Festival is made of the crème de la crème of jazz musicians.
Just a handful of the other artists included in the impressive 2024 lineup include: Laufey, Robert Glasper, Brittany Howard, and Cory Wong, Dinner Party, Thievery Corporation, Samara Joy, Noname, PJ Morton, Galactic with Irma Thomas, Moonchild, Cimafunk, Ghost-Note, Shabaka, Christian McBride's Jam Jawn, Meshell Ndegeocello, Artemis, Chief Adjuah, Aja Monet, Sun Ra Arkestra, Julius Rodriguez, Makaya McCraven and Jeff Parker, Acid Jazz is Dead, Sun Ra Arkestra among many others.
Aside from offering a fantastic array of artists to listen to, the festival hosts vendors, crafts, food trucks and wine and beer gardens for festival attendees to enjoy.
The 70th Annual Newport Jazz Festival begins on Aug. 2 and runs through Aug. 4. For fans of Newport Festivals, the annual Newport Folk Festival runs from July 26 to July 28, also taking place in Fort Adams State Park.
Tickets are currently on sale. A 3-day General Admission pass, the only type of ticket available at the moment, costs $265.74. On April 10, the festival will release one-day only tickets.
