Fans of The Voice were caught off guard by the news that John Legend would not return to the popular show.

However, news revealed by The Sun reveals that his departure had been part of the producers' strategy all along.

According to the source who spoke to the outlet, "[Legend] was signed for just a year deal and was chill about being on a 'one and done' schedule, and producers, too, were happy to have him come and go."

"Let's not forget that another factor for [Legend] was being on the biggest show of the moment and being able to promote his businesses at the time."

In addition to owning a skincare line called Loved01 and a Napa Valley wine brand named LVE, his entrepreneurial ventures span various industries.

They went on to say that Legend's dual role as a coach earning over $10 million and a prominent figure in the business world has created a mutually beneficial scenario.

"One good thing for [Legend] being on The Voice means he can go out to promote the show and his businesses very organically."

"It looks less like a heavy endorsement push, especially with great access to NBC shows."

"Certainly, he and [Chrissy Teigen] really did get the word out on their new dog business called Kismet."

The source explained that Legend has the option to take a year off and relax, yet his nature drives him to stay active, adding the "All of Me" singer's enthusiasm for his music and live shows is remarkable.

Being on The Voice can be likened to initiating an elaborate television and digital marketing strategy, making it a strategic decision, the source remarked.

Hints have been dropped that Legend plans to kick off a tour soon, along with whispers about his upcoming music projects.

This comes after Legend's revelation that he will not be returning to The Voice next season.

Moving forward from the red chairs for the upcoming season, Chance the Rapper and Dan + Shay have decided to take a break, while Reba McEntire remains the sole season 25 cast member continuing the journey.

Announcing her comeback as a coach for the 26th season, Gwen Stefani will again join Michael Bublé and Snoop Dogg on the panel.

Legend told ET, "We've always got so many things going on. I'll be doing a lot of shows this summer and traveling overseas."
