Grammy-winning artist Lizzo is preparing to release her fifth studio album, "B-", on June 5, but her promotional strategy has sparked controversy among fans who say she is borrowing heavily from Cardi B's recent marketing approach.
As per Atlanta Black Star, Lizzo has already released two singles, including "Don't Make Me Love U," offering a glimpse of the 12-track album. However, some fans noticed striking similarities between Lizzo's campaign and Cardi B's rollout for her 2025 album "Am I The Drama".
On May 23, an X user, likely a Cardi B supporter, accused Lizzo and other artists like Latto, Caresha, Drake, Summer Walker, and Kehlani of copying Cardi B's album promotion style without giving credit. The post read, "They won't give credit but her impact is undeniable."
Hol up— I’ve publicly said Cardi’s rollout changed the game and that im inspired by it. She’s one of the reasons I’m going so hard now. I’m not speaking for anyone else cus idk they tea. But me, I definitely took notes honey https://t.co/K80Ec1DdFT

According to the Jasmine Brand, Lizzo responded publicly the following day, acknowledging Cardi B's influence: "Hol up— I've publicly said Cardi's rollout changed the game and that I'm inspired by it. She's one of the reasons I'm going so hard now. I'm not speaking for anyone else cus idk they tea. But me, I definitely took notes honey."
Lizzo's promotional videos show her personally asking fans to pre-save her album due to limited marketing support from her label. In one clip, she sings at a piano, pleading for help to promote the album. In another, she wears a skirt and crop top with the album name and documents her effort hanging posters herself.
Cardi B's marketing campaign last year included videos of her selling CDs and vinyls on New York City subways with a drastically reduced album budget, highlighting a gritty, hands-on approach that resonated with fans for its authenticity. She even shared personal experiences during the promotion of her music.
Even though their strategy seems to be very similar, their fans deny the charges of copycatting or competition between the two artists. They often talk about how inspired they were by one another instead, and stress the friendly relations between Lizzo and Cardi B.
The two previously collaborated on the 2021 song "Rumors," and Lizzo featured on Cardi B's latest album "I Am the Drama' on the track "What's Goin' On."
Some fans called out critics for stirring unnecessary drama. One commented, "Y'all make an issue out of anything," while another said, "People really love to start and fuel imaginary beefs."
As Lizzo's album release approaches, it remains to be seen if her promotional efforts will translate into success despite mixed reactions to the campaign.
