Fans have been excited about Ariana Grande's return to music, but her latest music video has again sparked public discussion about the singer's appearance and a broader conversation about body image in the entertainment industry.

Per Daily Mail, Grande released the official music video for "Hate That I Made You Love Me" on June 1, marking another step in her return to music following several years focused on her acting career. The track serves as the lead single from her upcoming eighth studio album, "Petals", which is scheduled for release on July 31.

The Grammy-winning singer spent much of the last several years working on the film adaptation of the Broadway musical "Wicked", where she portrayed Glinda alongside actress Cynthia Erivo, who played Elphaba. Following the conclusion of the film's promotional campaign in late 2025, Grande shifted her attention back to recording and releasing new music.

The newly released video features actor Justin Long and follows a darkly comedic storyline in which his character attempts to move on after burying Grande's character, only to be continually haunted by her ghostly presence.

Although a great number of fans commended both the music video and the movie, some of the viewers concentrated more on Grande's physique, voicing their concerns through social networks.

Some internet users noticed that Grande was visibly thinner compared to previous years and speculated that maybe filming and promotion of the musical "Wicked" had impacted her adversely. Other users condemned such public interest in a person's body as potentially damaging and even presumptuous.

According to Atlanta Black Star, Grande has previously addressed public commentary about her appearance. In a popular social media video in 2023, she stated that the healthy image of herself that others saw was, in fact, the stage of her life where she wasn't doing too well personally.

She requested that her fans not jump to conclusions when it comes to the well-being of someone depending on their outward appearance, stressing that there could be variations when it comes to someone's health.

Discussion around Grande's appearance arose when the musical "Wicked" was being made and promoted, as did the discussion about Erivo. Both had been receiving constant criticism about their weight change.

While the new controversy was rising, Grande seemed like she had her career in mind. Along with preparing for the release of "Petals", she is set to appear in the upcoming comedy film "Focker-In-Law" and has continued promoting her latest musical projects.
