Fans and singers alike are obsessed with Sam Smith's monster hit "Stay with Me," and Kelly Clarkson is no exception.

Clarkson and her band stopped by Symphony Park in Chicago last week and the American Idol champion decided to treat fans to Smith's endearing soul ballad, Billboard notes. The singer brings her impressive vocal range to the tune, giving it a diva makeover that would make Simon Cowell proud. Check out the rendition below.

Smith's version of the song spent a few weeks at the number two spot on Billboard's Hot 100 singles chart, and it is currently maintaining a top 10 position at the nine slot. The song, about a one night stand and the looming aftereffects, took Smith and his collaborators nearly an hour to write before the recording session. "The song just flowed out of us so naturally," he told NME last month.

"I layered my voice probably about 20 times," Smith explained about the recording process. "I stood in different parts around the room and would layer my voice more and more and more, harmonizing and that kind of stuff." After he heard the gospel playback, Smith knew the song was complete. "And I remember nearly crying because the whole song suddenly made sense. That one touch just turned the song into ... it just sounded so anthemic."

"Stay with Me" has since been covered by the likes of Ed Sheeran, Florence and the Machine, FKA twigs and, most surprisingly, Vin Diesel.

Clarkson's last studio release was 2013's Wrapped in Red, a Christmas album of originals and standards. In 2010, the singer crossed over into country with the Jason Aldean duet "Don't You Wanna Stay." She won American Idol in 2002 and has been in the limelight ever since.
