MGMT appeared on Late Night with Jimmy Fallon last night in support of their upcoming, self-titled album. After a disappointing show on Letterman, the band needed to pick it up a notch if they didn't want to lose mainstream audiences completely.

So, in MGMT fashion, they took Fallon's stage wearing scuba gear and serenaded a bowl of fish with their song, "Plenty of Girls in the Sea."

The synth effects and lighting worked well with the costuming, and the performance overall was pretty engaging. It is safe to say, though, that MGMT has kind of gone of the deep end on this album. It's actually a nice experimental effort, but definitely not what their typical fan base is used to hearing (or possibly want to hear). But you can't deny the work they put into their live performances.

They group also played a web-exclusive song, "Alien Days." The performances begin with Andrew Van Wyngarden huffing a helium balloon to alter his voice, giving it that "alien" effect. Compared to "Plenty of Girls in the Sea," the song is less psychedelic and synth heavy and has a more back-to-basics feel.

"MGMT" is scheduled to drop Sept. 17 and has a special feature called Optimizer, which accesses an immersive visual experience.
