HBO has announced the released of the first fully authorized documentary on the late Nirvana frontman, Kurt Cobain. Titled Kurt Cobain: Montage of Heck. Although other Cobain and Nirvana films have been made in the past, this upcoming documentary is the first to be made with full cooperation of Cobain's family. Oscar-nominee Brett Morgen (Crossfire Hurricane, On the Ropes) wrote, directed, and produced the project and was given access to Cobain's entire personal and family archives, Rolling Stone reports.

The film will also feature footage from numerous Nirvana performances as well as previously unheard songs, never-before-seen home movies, recordings, artwork, photography, journals, demos, and songbooks with Cobain's daughter Frances Bean Cobain executive producing the project.

In a press release, Morgen said:

"I started work on this project eight years ago. Like most people, when I started, I figured there would be limited amounts of fresh material to unearth. However, once I stepped into Kurt's archive, I discovered over 200 hours of unreleased music and audio, a vast array of art projects (oil paintings, sculptures), countless hours of never-before-seen home movies, and over 4,000 pages of writings that together help paint an intimate portrait of an artist who rarely revealed himself to the media."

The film doesn't have an official 2015 premiere date, but will reportedly feature "a mix of animation and live action" according to an interview Morgen did with NME back in 2013.

"If you think about Kurt, he's a contradiction," he told them. "He could be sincere and sentimental, and also ironic and sarcastic. He was sweet and sour. He was incredibly funny, too, and the film has to reflect his spirit."

This isn't the HBO's first Nirvana connection. They are currently airing former drummer Dave Grohl's documentary Sonic Highways.
