Break-ups are tough and depressing for pretty much anybody, but when a musician gets heartbroken, at least they can channel it into some great music. Here are 10 musicians who went through break-ups in 2014.
1. Chris Martin & Gwyneth Paltrow
If nothing else, 2014 will go down in history as the year we all learned what a "conscious uncoupling" was, thanks to the separation of Coldplay's Chris Martin and actress Gwyneth Paltrow back in March.
2. Chris Martin & Jennifer Lawrence
Chris Martin may have had a good year professionally, but it was kind of a bummer on a personal level. Following his split with Gwyneth Paltrow, Martin starting seeing another Oscar winning actress, Jennifer Lawrence, but by late October the two were finished.
3. Mariah Carey & Nick Cannon
After six years of marriage, pop superstar Mariah Carey officially announced her split from Dave Chappelle's nemesis Nick Cannon back in August. In a tweet sent out following the announcement, Cannon described Carey as "an amazing mother" to their twin children whom he will always love "unconditionally."
4. Wiz Khalifa & Amber Rose
Although model Amber Rose promised to love rapper Wiz Khalifa "forever" as recently as Sept. 8, by the end of September the two were headed for divorce, with TMZ reporting that Khalifa simply "didn't want to be married to her anymore." There were also rumors that Nick Cannon was somehow involved in their split, though he denies this.
5. Jordin Sparks & Jason Derulo
In late September, pop stars Jordin Sparks and Jason Derulo split up after a three year relationship, and though many accused Derulo of infidelity, the 25-year-old singer claimed that it was the "pressures of marriage" and incompatible schedules that led to their break-up, which was reportedly conducted over the phone (classy).
6. Britney Spears & David Lucado
In late August, Britney Spears sent out a tweet that read "Ahhhh the single life!," an indirect announcement of her split with the notably not-famous David Lucado after 17 months together. Lucado had reportedly been caught on video dancing and making out with a woman who wasn't Britney Spears, which is a big mistake if your girlfriend is Britney Spears.
7. French Montana & Khloe Kardashian
Rapper French Montana and reality star Khloe Kardashian first began dating back in April, and though they initially split up in September, the two reportedly reconciled in November. However, just this past weekend, the two have apparently split up once again. Looks like this will be one of those on-again-off again relationships.
8. Neil Young & Pegi Young
Perhaps the saddest break-up story of the year is Neil Young's, who filed for divorce from his wife Pegi Young in late August after 36 years of marriage. The two were frequent musical partners and established the Bridge School in California together, which supports children with speech and physical disabilities. Soon after their split, Neil began dating actress Daryl Hannah.
9. Zooey Deschanel & Jamie Linden
Back in August, She & Him singer Zooey Deschanel split up with her boyfriend of two years, screenwriter Jamie Linden. Don't get your hopes up though, indie guys: she's now dating film producer Jacob Pechenik.
10. Ariana Grande & Jai Brooks
Although Ariana Grande initially dated Jai Brooks of the Janoskians from 2012 to 2013, the two reunited back in May of this year. However, the two split up once again this past August, and now Grande is dating Detroit rapper and collaborator Big Sean.
