Jimmy Kimmel has earned laughs and renown for using real world social media to get the best out of his famous guests, and now he's gotten The Decemberists to perform real YouTube comments from silly videos while promoting the band's new album What A Terrible World, What A Beautiful World (from Pitchfork).

This wasn't like Kimmel's popular Jimmy Kimmel Live segment "Mean Tweets," where celebrities read bitter tweets made against them however. The Decemberists weren't performing comments left on their own YouTube videos (although that could have been awesome as well) but rather them oct basic of comments left on the sorts of videos that we all love-kittens, pandas...Justin Bieber. All got the typical folk/baroque pop approach that Colin Meloy and company employ during their day job.

A few highlights: The band's typical mellow approach made the comments left on "Horrible boat crashes #1" all the more hilarious, singing "OH MY GOSH, OH MY GOSH, OH MY GOSH, NO WAYYY" (without the capitalized letters of course). An adorable video titled "Noisy kittens waiting for dinner!" led us to expect some over-the-top cute comments but instead we got the Decemberists repeating a typical piece of spam: "I CAN'T BELIEVE I MAKE $5000 A MONTH WORKING FROM HOME!!!! CLICK LINK TO FIND OUT HOW" (again, sang in a lower volume than implied by text).

Simply the best however was when an angry commenter criticized Justin Bieber during a highlight reel of the pop star's worst moment, telling him to "go back to Canada." Meloy sang the part of the first commenter and then accordion player Jenny Conlee gets a solo moment as the response comment: "Shut up he hot and he can do whatever."
