Mad Season is one of the last '90s groups that people expected to reunite. For one, they were a one-off supergroup to begin with. Secondly, two of the four members (John Baker Saunders and Layne Staley) have passed away.

But reunite they did, and in a big way. After a gig in L.A. last month, Mike McCready and Barrett Martin returned to the grunge mecca, Seattle, for a set at Benaroya Hall.

Rolling Stone was there, and they liked what they saw. Here's a sample: "What could have been little more than another rock reformation gig turned out to be a genuinely special, surprising show that both exceeded its own hype and outdid its own billing."

The show began with a three-song set by the Seattle Symphony Orchestra inspired by fallen Nirvana singer Kurt Cobain and local heroes Pearl Jam. PJ guitarist McCready penned the third tune, "Walking the Horizon," and joined the orchestra with his six-string.

Soundgarden's Chris Cornell filled in for Staley on vocals, and Guns N' Roses bassist Duff McKagan played Saunders' parts. Plenty of other special guests showed up, too; you can check out the setlist below (via Setlist FM):
