Days of Our Lives may be getting ready to celebrate its 50th anniversary, but it is also starting to look like it really may be its last. Back in January 2014, the daytime series was renewed for two more years as its ratings were healthy and the show was reeling in viewers. But now, just several months later, everything seems to have changed. According to Soap Opera Network, the ratings keep sinking, putting Days at risk for cancellation.

It is not just one thing that seems to have contributed to the unraveling of what used to be a fan-favorite soap opera. Days recently replaced its head writers, which was certainly a great move because the recent storylines were simply lacking, but the problem is that episodes are shot months in advance, so the actual new writing will not begin airing until much later this year, and by then it might be too late to save the show.

Days has also focused too much on a steady stream of new characters and ignored the ones with deep roots in the history of the show. It has also confirmed that several former fan favorites such as Peter Reckell and Stephen Nichols will be returning for the anniversary celebration in November. Rumor has it that Alison Sweeney is also coming back.

While it is great to see these beloved characters who have all spent decades on camera back when Days was a solid show, it will not fix anything. Bringing back Reckell for a real storyline would be a wiser idea on the part of Days brass.

So many daytime shows have been canceled in recent years that the whole genre really does seem to have become a dying breed. What do you think can be done to save Days? Do you think the way that things stand now NBC will want to invest more time and money in the struggling series? Tell us your thoughts in the comments section below.
