One Direction is working on its new album in the wake of Zayn Malik's departure and between legs of its On The Road Again Tour, and according to member Liam Payne, record No. 5 is going to be quite the sonic departure for 1D.

In an interview with Capital FM in England, Payne revealed that he wants to have a rock 'n' roll album with One Direction that will stand the test of time.

"The album's coming together really well actually. The boys we've been writing with have come up with some great, great songs that are kind of like a bit Oasis-y almost which is ace," he said. "I love that."

Oasis isn't the only bigtime English act that One Direction is name-checking for its fifth studio album, which is set to be released before the end of the year. Payne also cited frequent 1D collaborator Ed Sheeran as an inspiration to make "timeless" music that's appropriate for any mood.

"The songs have come out a bit more chill because I think we want this to be quite a long-lasting album that you can listen to anytime," Payne said. "You like how Ed's album, anytime you can throw on an Ed song and it can always make sense. We're trying to do that."

Concrete information surrounding One Direction's FOUR follow-up is scarce, though it is confirmed that the band has been working with Nickelback, Jamie Scott and more during the writing process. The as-yet untitled album will be One Direction's first effort without founding member Zayn Malik.
