If you were hoping to see Sam Smith this spring, we have some bad news for you: the "Lay Me Down" singer has cancelled all of his live obligations through the end of June. Today (May 7), the Grammy-winner announced that his ongoing vocal cord issues have made him have to schedule for a surgery next week, and the eight-week recovery will mean he's out of commission until summer.

Smith made the announcement in a post on his Instagram. "Dear All: I am very upset to announced I have been battling to get my vocal cords better the last 10 days but unfortunately they haven't recovered and I am going to need surgery," he wrote. "I'm so gutted to be missing all the shows and events I was meant to be playing at. The doctors say I will be back in 6-8 weeks and I cannot wait to sing for you all soon."

Smith also noted that the surgery will require him to be completely silent for three weeks but that he will be "able to sing like never before."

The surgery and tour cancellation comes at an inconvenient time for Smith, who was forced to cancel appearances at Hangout Fest, Rock in Rio, the Billboard Music Awards and Red Nose Day, as Radio.com points out.

Assuming all goes according to plan, Smith's next live obligation will be a concert at Forecastle in Louisville, Kentucky, on July 17. He will the continue on an 11-date North American tour.
