Empire season two is shaping up to be a potentially epic one. After the FOX show broke out earlier this year with guest stars ranging from Mary J Blige to Courtney Love, plenty of stars have already signed on for this September's run. Today (July 7), news has been circulating that Destiny's Child singer Kelly Rowland has now signed on for a guest stint.

Rowland will be joining the likes of Alicia Keys, Lenny Kravitz, Oprah and Chris Rock on Empire season two, E! Online reports. Instead of taking on singing duties, Rowland is reported to be playing the mother of Terrance Howard's Lucious Lion.

But, worry not, there's no weird time bending going on in Empire (Rowland is 34; Howard is 46). Rowland will be appearing in some of the show's many flashback scenes, depicting the time before Lucious Lion and his wife, Cookie (Taraji P Henson) made it big.

No word yet on how much screen time Rowland will be getting as Lion's mother.

For those who follow the writers and casting news during Empire's off-season, Rowland's guest stint should come as no big surprise. Last month (June 3), the R&B songstress was spotted in the Empire writing room.

Season two of Empire is set to debut on Wednesday, Sept. 23. The show found major successes in its Wednesday timeslot this spring, following episodes of American Idol. As Empire became a runaway hit, it eventually beat out the once unstoppable Idol in ratings and gathered up a No. 1 album on the Billboard 200.
