Why'd they have to go and make things so "Complicated?" After two years of marriage, pop star Avril Lavigne and her Nickelback singer husband Chad Kroeger, have announced that they are breaking up. On Wednesday (Sept. 2), the Canadian couple announced their separation.

In an emotional Instagram post, Lavigne revealed that she and Kroeger are calling it quits. Using a photo from their wedding day in 2013, Lavigne, 30, said that she and her 40-year-old former beau will remain "the best of friends" despite the split.

"It is with heavy heart that Chad and I announce our separation today," she wrote. "Through not only the marriage, but the music as well, we've created many unforgettable moments. We are still, and forever will be, the best of friends, and will always care deeply for each other. To all our family, friends and fans, thank you sincerely for the support."

Kroeger and Lavigne first met when she was recording her self-titled album in March 2012. Throughout the recording process, on which Kroeger co-wrote and produced eight tracks for Lavigne, the two became romantically involved.

They married on Canada Day (July 1) in 2013 in the South of France. Shortly after their marriage, split rumors began to swirl, but the two former lovebirds always dismissed the rumors until the announcement of their separation. Throughout their short marriage, the couple tackled major health issues, including Lavigne's Lyme disease diagnosis and Kroeger's issues with his vocal cords.

This is Lavigne's second marriage. She was previously married to Sum 41 singer Derick Wibly from 2006 to 2010.
