Finding great family TV shows is like finding a needle in a haystack these days, especially with the over-saturation of reality shows that fill our minds with so much turmoil and drama. When great scripted sitcoms emerge, like NBC's The Carmichael Show, starring David Alan Grier and Loretta Devine, people can't help but watch, laugh and enjoy. The new comedy has quickly become a household favorite, with ratings climbing solidly for NBC in only its second week.

Deadline reports that the NBC comedy, which started as "a summer experiment" has scored an 18% increase with adult viewers in its second week of airing. The show, which airs on Wednesday nights at 9 p.m., has reportedly pulled in the largest number of viewers in that time slot of any network summer comedies ever in only their second week.

The sitcom centers around the life of Jerrod Carmichael, a stand-up comic who is trying to balance his career and personal life along with maintaining his relationships and bond with his brother, girlfriend and parents Cynthia (Devine) and Joe (Grier.)

According to Vulture, the show tackles tough and timely topics that most families can relate to and finds the humor within. Some episodes are based around topics such as transgender people, gun control, religion and even the headline news issue of "the death of an unarmed black man."

The show's six episode test run will end on Wednesday Sept. 9 but with these ratings, great writing and powerful messages, The Carmichael Show is sure to return for a second season.
