Nine years trailing his 2006 LP, On An Island, David Gilmour's follow-up sophomore solo album, Rattle That Lock, will hit stores on September 18. In preparation for the album's arrival, the former Pink Floyd guitarist shared a behind the scenes, making-of video for the album's second single, "Today." The two minute video details how the track was crafted from a collaboration with Roxy Music guitarist Phil Manzanera and why back-up singers are often Gilmour's favored go-to musical element.

Both Gilmour and Manzanera co-produced Rattle That Lock, a duo that also put their heads together for On An Island and Pink Floyd's last-ever studio album, 2014's The Endless River. In the clip, the 69-year-old guitarist praises Manzanera, giving him full credit for forming "Today" from Gilmour's previously scrapped and rejected material.

As Rolling Stone notes, "'Today' was one of the ones that Phil put together of two or three pieces of music of mine that I had sort of ignored," Gilmour said. "He's very good at finding them and saying 'That's great, you should use it. How about using it with that piece and that piece?' So he mocked that one up. It's a gift."

Along with Rattle That Lock's title track, "Today" boasts the musical flair of backup vocalists Mica Paris and Louise Marshall. "Something I've always really liked, the idea of the backing singer," Gilmour said. "We have used, as Pink Floyd and myself, we have used backing singers going back to Dark Side of the Moon, where they were liberally plastered over a lot of it. And it's something I've really enjoyed."

Ranked as one of Rolling Stone's 30-Must-Hear Fall Albums, Rattle That Lock is available for pre-order via Gilmour's official website. The veteran rocker will head out for a string of North American tour dates in support of his latest solo venture, starting in Los Angeles on March 24, eventually launching his first ever South American tour in December, Consequence of Sound reports.
