Cyndi Lauper may be best known for her fun-filled '80s hits "Girls Just Wanna Have Fun" and "Time After Time" as well as her hit musical Kinky Boots, but the pop star is about to get country fried for a new album. During the London premiere of her Tony-award winning show, Lauper announced that she's been working in Nashville on a country album, due for release in 2016.

In an interview with Bang Showbiz at the London premiere of Kinky Boots, Lauper revealed that she wants to revisit the songs of her youth and record a country album.

"I don't know if you listen to country music but I want to work with Seymour Stein - he was the co-founder of Sire Records - and I've always wanted to work with him. So I figure while I've still got teeth in my mouth let me go work with him," she said. "I want to work with Tony Brown down in Nashville and do a country record, finally," Lauper said. "I want to record all those songs I used to sing my guts out in my apartment to! It'll be out next year.''

It's unclear whether or not Lauper's country album will also include original songs, newer country songs or be an LP full of the genre's classics.

Lauper isn't the only pop or rock musician in recent months to declare her intent to go country - Aerosmith frontman Steven Tyler also revealed that he's working on a country album, even reworking some of his classic rock anthems into down home versions at a recent New York concert. Tyler has also released his first country single, "Love Is Your Name" earlier this year.

Lauper's album will be released next year.
