John Darnielle of The Mountain Goats has teamed up with Rolling Stone editor Christopher R. Weingarten for #tcot, a collaborative noise cassette release. Produced by Ben Greenberg of The Men, the already sold-out tape comes out just in time for Cassette Store Day (10/17) via Northern Spy.

As Stereogum reports, the duo's project is "named after the hashtag acronym that usually means "top conservatives on Twitter,' which as Pitchfork reassures is "a pointed wink from the notedly progressive Darnielle."

After announcing the #tcot release, Weingarten urged via Twitter that listeners use the hashtag when discussing the #tcot cassette project online. In true indie rock style, the two are in a way spamming the followers of the top conservatives on Twitter hashtag with their experimental noise rock cassette tape. The #tcot feed is about to get interesting (or at least delightfully confusing to some).

Although not quite as well-known as the annually-celebrated Record Store Day, Cassette Store Day is absolutely a thing. Saturday October 16th marks the second annual international celebration of cassette tape culture. In the spirit of the holiday, #tcot is only available on cassette (meaning no digital release), but you can listen to an excerpt below.

From the brief preview, #tcot sounds improvised and jazzy, but with the combination’s background the noise release could go anywhere from there. Darnielle is one of the most beloved and prolific indie rockers ever as the force behind The Mountain Goats. While Weingarten is best known for being a rock critic with a number of publications over the years, he was the drummer for the experimental noise rock band Parts & Labor for a while.

Add Greenberg's production to the mix, plus a dash of left-leaning kitschy political satire through the nature of the release, and the result is one of the many reasons why indie rock is forever awesome.
