John Cena is currently in talks to play the lead role in Duke Nukem. The upcoming film is an adaptation of the popular video game franchise that features a politically incorrect action hero.
Platinum Dunes, the company run by Michael Bay, Andrew Form, and Brad Fuller will produce the film. As of late, no director has been tapped.
The people behind Duke Nukem are also looking for a writer to pen the script. Initially, the film was supposed to be released by Dimension Films, but Paramount took over after the contract lapsed.
If Cena will accept the gig, Duke Nukem will serve as his third film under Paramount. The former wrestler previously appeared in Daddy's Home 2 and he is also set to star in Bumblebee, the studio's Transformers spinoff.
John Cena Opens Up About His Acting Career
Last year, Cena talked about his acting career and shared that it was actually the heads of WWE who convinced him to pursue the craft on top of being a wrestler.
"Originally what I wanted my film career to be was an extension of the WWE business model. I understood. WWE studios opened in 2003/2004, they began to film movies, and the model of the business was, 'If we can make our stars bigger stars, they will come to see WWE.' Well, that's what I wanted, but I didn't want to go do movies," said Cena.
During his interview, Cena said that he finds starring in films very taxing because it follows an entirely different process compared to WWE. He also dislikes the fact that no one cheers on him while filming because this is what he experiences during wrestling matches.
However, years later, Cena has grown to love acting. He has appeared in morning talk shows and has also done late night bits. The 40-year-old has also tried hosting and doing R-rated comedies.
Getting Engaged With Nikki Bella
On top of his professional career, Cena is also preoccupied with his upcoming wedding to his fiancée Nikki Bella. The couple got engaged in April, and Cena shared that he was the one who designed Bella's engagement ring.
In October, the couple decided to move back their wedding date. Cena also said that he and his fiancée changed their wedding location. The official date of their nuptials is kept under wraps.
