The Rolling Stones got all sorts of headlines for its 2013 tour when it managed to bring on a celebrity guest musician to perform during its set at every city the band played. Aerosmith isn't doing too bad for itself, managing to land a big name to come onstage at the band's Boston show last night, albeit not a musical name per se. Johnny Depp came up to join the band on guitar during "Train Kept A Rollin'."

We're sure fans at the Xfinity Center were thrilled to see the acting superstar onstage with the headlining rockers, but it wasn't altogether that surprising of an occurrence. In fact, it wasn't even the first time Depp joined Aerosmith onstage to play that very track. The actor had dropped in to the band's 2012 concert at the Hollywood Bowl in Los Angeles.

That show made sense as Depp lives in Los Angeles, plays guitar and happens to be an Aerosmith fan. This week's show just worked out. The actor has been in town shooting the film Black Mass, a crime drama where Depp will play notorious Boston crime boss Whitey Bulger. The band was in town on tour, and as Boston is of course its home venue, we're sure they wanted to give something special to the fans.

"Train Kept A Rollin'" is a blues standard by Tiny Bradshaw that many rock bands have covered over the years. Aerosmith's version, off of 1974's Get Your Wings, has become the most popular variant.
