A few months after he parted ways with Atlantic Records, Wale has released a new four-track EP titled, It's Complicated

The record comes as a surprise because, unlike other artists, the rapper has not spoken about or promoted the EP prior to the release. In fact, he announced to his fans that he will be dropping new music on Monday, March 13, a few hours before the EP became available for download and streaming.

New Music

"DMV! He's trying to do that cool artsy shit, but that's Pharrell y'all," the 33-year-old told fans on Instagram. "This me. I'm dropping something tonight."

The four-track EP features the songs "It's Complicated," "Black Bonnie," "Effortless," and "Let It Go." It only has one feature, fellow rapper Jacquees, who appears on the song "Black Bonnie."

The radio silence from the "Running Back" rapper was probably due to the fact that he has spent most of his time writing and recording the four new tracks on the EP. He revealed to a fan that he worked on It's Complicated for a week.

After thanking fans, he also tweeted that he is already thinking about his next step. He teased that he wrote a track for "a love life" and he is trying to figure out where to "go next."

The new EP follows Wale's fifth studio album, Shine, which came out in April 2017. Since then, he has released a couple of new tracks including original songs "Staying In Power" and "All-Star Break Up," a track he released on Valentine's Day, as well as a remix of SZA's "The Weekend."

Back in January, he also teased that he is back in a studio with J.Cole for a collaboration. Whatever they were working on has not been released as of this writing.

However, they have an extensive history of collaborations starting with 2009 for the song "Rather Be With You." However, they have not worked together since 2015 when Wale released the track "The Pessimist."

Parting With Atlantic Records

The EP marks the rapper's first since parting with Atlantic Records earlier this year. Under the record label, the 33-year-old released three albums: The Gifted (2013), The Album About Nothing (2015), and Shine (2017).

A source confirmed Wale's split with Atlantic to DJ Booth, but the reason for the parting was not provided. Many suspect that the disappointing sales of the rapper's most recent studio album caused the relationship between the artist and the record label to turn sour.
