For more than 30 years now, Garbage has been on-and-off the music scene. Helming 57 nominations, including four Grammy Nods and 2 BRIT nominations, there was a point wherein they thought it was the end of the record.

In an interview with Classic Rock, Garbage Frontwoman Shirley Manson admits that their Album "Beautiful Garbage" was the end of their career and that they "were never going to recover,".

Released in 2001, "Beautiful Garbage" debuted No. 13 on the Billboard 200 charts. However, despite its critically acclaimed success, it did not match the commercial success of its predecessors.

The album, which was released three weeks after the September 11th attacks, suffered from the lack of marketing and the inability of its lead single, "Androgyny," to attain high chart positions in the United States.

According to the singer, the album, which was just reissued to commemorate its 20th anniversary, "died on the vine" when it was initially published, despite reaching No. 6 on the Official UK albums chart when it was first released.

Manson said in a statement that over time, "Beautiful Garbage" has received respect from our fans, with most of the songs from the album still in the rotation of their current live sets. She added that the band have "always felt incredibly proud" of the album and felt that "it was in many ways very much ahead of its time,".

Garbage's seventh studio album, No Gods No Masters, was dropped earlier this year, and it has received positive reviews.

No Gods, No Masters

Released on June 11, 2021, "No Gods, No Masters" peaked No. 3 for a week at Billboard's Top Alternative Albums.

Kerrang gave the album a four out of five, saying that "No Gods No Masters" is one of the "coolest, most vital releases of 2021", as it came from a 30-year old band with seven albums into their career.

In the same Classic Rock interview, Manson said that it took long for them to "regain" the band's equilibrium, confidence, and joy.

Up until today, the 55-year old Frontwoman also revealed that the band always "expects the worst" when they release new music. Manson explained that they are still always "quite surprised" when getting positive feedbacks from their music - saying it is not something they "really expect or are accustomed to,".

Garbage's 'thematic' lyrics

Since its inception in 1993, Garbage has been encouraging important conversations through its lyrics, including misogyny.

Shirley Manson, the lead singer of the band Garbage, says that many people have thought of her as a "crazy, angry feminist over the years."

Asked if it feels "demoralising" to revisit the same topics across the years continually, Manson directly answered a "No".

Manson feels that "more and more people have added their voices" as the years have progressed, it becomes "very fractionally better,".
