Twenty years into the band, frontman and pianist Isaac Slade announces his departure from The Fray.

Slade, who formed the band in 2002 with his schoolmate Joe King, manned the band for two decades, along with Dave Welsh for guitar, and Ben Wysocki for drums.

The 40-year-old singer took to Instagram to announce the shocking news to the band's fans, old and new.

"I have some heavy news to share today. I know it's been pretty quiet on the band front for a long time but I want to let everyone know I'm stepping down from The Fray. It's been an honor and privilege to make music with those three amazing guys for the last two decades, and all for the best fans anyone could ever imagine," he wrote.

Isaac also revealed in the same post that he had already informed his band members of his departure "five or six years ago" as he was going to start his "long exit ramp" as it was finally the time.

The frontman will be handing over the reins to King spend the rest of his "little life" on earth with his "incredible wife and our two little miracles of kids."

Wishing the band well, Isaac penned a thoughtful message to their avid fans.

"Here's to our legendary fans, to our steadfast families and friends, to the teams of brilliant people behind the scenes who made this journey possible in the first place, and most of all to Ben, Joe and Dave. Here's to the last 20 years of walking together, crying together, playing together, singing together & laughing together. Thanks."

However, Isaac would not be leaving the band immediately as he would still be playing his swan song on May 14 at the Genesee Theatre in Waukegan in Illinois.

The End for The Fray?

Taking a hiatus after fulfilling their five-record deal with Epic Records, The Fray has been inactive since then.

The Fray released their Greatest Hits compilation album "Through the Years: The Best of the Fray," last 2016, along with a new single, "Singing Low."

Their greatest hit, "How To Save A Life," the second single from the album of the same name, peaked on the No. 3 spot of the Billboard Hot 100 in 2006.

"How To Save A Life" was also featured mainly on ABC's longest-running medical drama, "Grey's Anatomy," sung by Tony Winner Sara Ramirez.
