Shawn Mendes' latest song, 'When You're Gone,' was released on March 31 and has lyrics in which he reflects on the process of terminating his relationship with Camila Cabello. While he did not name her specifically, it can be quickly assumed that he's processing his feelings over the love he lost.

In his new song "When You're Gone," Shawn Mendes reflects on his romance with Camila Cabello, which he shared with a music video on March 31.

There comes a point in every relationship when one know it's time to call it quits, which will prompt someone to do whatever it takes to keep things going, at least that is what Mendes is saying in his song.

"I know what we're supposed to do, it's so hard for me to let go of you, so I'm just tryna hold on," Shawn sings. "Hold on, I don't wanna know what it's like when you're gone. I don't wanna move on."

In the chorus, Shawn admits that being with the song's subject was the "happiest [he's] ever been." In the bridge, he realizes his lady is slipping away. "Starting to feel like you don't need me," he sings.

"Wanna believe it's all for the better. It's getting real, I'm missing you deeply, so I'm just tryna hold on."

Camila's public breakup with Shawn in November 2021 is likely to have had an impact on Shawn's new songs, even if he didn't directly say so. It's not as if the impact is not mutual. Cabello's new song seems to be inspired by this breakup too. Singers often sing what they feel or experience.

Camila's post-breakup tune "Bam Bam," featuring Ed Sheeran, was released earlier this month. The song "Bam Bam" is about getting over a tough breakup. "Asi es la vida, si, yeah that's just life, baby," Camila sings in the chorus. "Yeah, love came around and it knocked me down, but I'm back on my feet."

Many more lines hinted that she's singing about Shawn Mendes. "You said you hated the ocean but you're surfing now," is quite telling.

Shawn and Camila have maintained a cordial connection throughout their split. They were spotted together in Miami in the start of 2022. Then, in a March 2022 interview, Camila announced why they drifted apart even obviously, they still have love for each other. "Priorities shift," she said.
