The Recording Academy just announced this year's best new artist nominees, and while some of them are already quite well-known among mainstream listeners like Anitta, Latto, and Maneskin, some might wonder about the other nominees and how they earned their nominations.

According to their website, the Grammy for Best New Artist is to recognize the musical contributions and impact of "one of the most crucial aspects in the music community."

Ten artists were hailed as nominees for the award, including Anitta, Omar Apollo, DOMi & JD Beck, Samara Joy, Latto, Maneskin, Muni Long, Tobe Nwigwe, Molly Tuttle, and Wet Leg.

Anitta

Anitta was born Larissa de Macedo Machado in Rio de Janeiro, Brazil. The 29-year-old singer embarked on her musical career in 2013 following her debut album, "Anitta." 

While she has been relatively successful in her home country, it was not until her third studio album, "Bang," that she further rose to prominence in Latin music.

She reportedly has numerous awards under her belt, with four MTV Europe Music Awards. 

Omar Apollo

Omar Apollo, born Omar Apolonio Velasco, hails from Indiana. He performs English and Spanish songs.

He had his start in music by uploading his songs to SoundCloud. Apollo announced that his future new music would be more diverse. 

Apollo lentered the music industry with the release of his debut studio album in April of this year. Pitchfork commended him for his album and gave "Ivory" an 8 out of 10 score.

DOMi & JD Beck

Out of this year's nominees, DOMi & JD Beck are the only artists who come as a duo. They are Domi Louna and JD Beck, and they infuse their cultural differences into their music.

Louna is a French keyboardist while Beck is an American drummer. 

Samara Joy

According to NPR, Samara Joy is a 22-year-old jazz singer. She began her music career just three years ago, but her roots in music run deep.

NPR's Ari Shapiro was astounded to find out about this detail about Joy, "So I was shocked when she told me she only started singing jazz at age 18. Before that, she did plays and sang in the church choir. Now she's touring the world."

Maneskin

Maneskin is an Italian rock band consisting of four members. They were formed in Rome in 2016, and rose to prominence following their appearance on Italy's "X Factor."

Their version of The Four Season's "Beggin'" became a viral song on social media, peaking on the Billboard Global Excl. U.S. chart.

Maneskin's debut album, "Ill Ballo Della Vita" was released in 2018. 

These are a few of the talented artists that were nominated for Best New Artist, and although only one will win, their careers are still blossoming. Fans might expect to see them in the coming Grammy Awards in the future.
