The New Zealand Herald confirmed that the co-founder of the Clean was found dead after he was reported missing on November 27. He was last seen at a shopping mall in Christchurch, New Zealand.

Kilgour famously founded the indie rock band, "The Clean", with his brother David. From its debut in 1978, the indie rock band ultimately became the most influential band under the Flying Nun label.

It released a number of albums throughout its active years, including "Vehicle," "Modern Rock," "Unknown Country," "Getaway," and "Mister Pop."

In 2017, The Clean became an inductee of the New Zealand Music Hall of Fame.

The band faced disbandment in the 1980s, leading Kilgour to leave for New York City and create The Mad Scene with Lisa Siegel.

Clean's US label, Merge Records, confirmed the event through a statement to Pitchfork.

"Hamish was also an accomplished visual artist, and his fantastical drawings adorn many record sleeves. We feel lucky to have known him. Our thoughts are with his family and his fellow members of the New Zealand music community. Safe travels, Hamish," the message said.

Co-founder of Ba Da Bing! Records, Ben Goldberg, also penned a separate statement in which it applauded his music and how fans could always hear his heart in every song he made.

Hamish Kilgour's cause of death is yet to be publicized, but a police officer in New Zealand has since confirmed that his case was already referred to the coroner.

Still, fans expressed their heartbreak in the online posts they created for him.
