Rossington's life had been tested multiple times before he passed away, having been involved in and survived the 1977 airplane crash that killed three of Lynyrd Skynyrd's members: original vocalist Ronald Van Zant, Cassie Gaines , and Steve Gaines.

His injuries led him to take pain medications for his arms, legs, ankles, wrists, and pelvis, and it soon caused him to be addicted to drugs.

Despite those issues, Rossington continued playing and was able to join the band when it got inducted into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame in 2006.

The Jacksonville, Florida native initially started his career as a member of the trio named Me, You, and Him, with bassist Larry Junstrom and drummer Bob Burns. Before dreaming of playing with the band, Rossington had been open about wanting to become a baseball player.
