The 2014 MTV Video Music Awards air tonight at 9 p.m. ET with the celebrities heading down the red carpet at 8 p.m. ET. The pre-show also kicks off at 8 p.m.

Performing the pre-show is Charli XCX, who will be making her MTV VMA debut. She told Billboard to expect "lots of drumming."

"Lots of drums, lots of leather, lots of feathers, lots of angels," the singer told them. "It's going to be amazing."

She added: "I'm quite nervous, to be honest, because the only awards show performance I did before was with Iggy, so it's a little different this time because it's my own song. But I'm very excited. I've put a lot of effort into it. I think it's going to be sick."

Ariana Grande is set to open the show with a performance of her Zedd-assisted dance track "Break Free" as well as a performance of her super-diva anthem "Bang Bang" with Nicki Minaj and Jessie J. They are expected to drop the music video for the track immediately after.

Joining Grande, Minaj, and Jessie J on the performance lineup Taylor Swift, Maroon 5, Usher, Sam Smith, Iggy Azalea & Rita Ora, 5 Seconds of Summer, and Beyoncé with DJ Mustard serving as house DJ for the evening.

Beyoncé leads the VMA nominations with eight nods this year. You can see the full list of nominees here.

The 2014 MTV VMAs take place tonight in Inglewood, California at the legendary Forum. Look out for our coverage from the red carpet through the rolling credits.
