2023 was quite the year for country music. For the first time in decades, two country hits have occupied the first two spots on the Billboard Hot 100 chart with Morgan Wallen's "Last Night" and Luke Combs' "Fast Car."

Now, with their continuous domination at the Billboard Hot 100 chart, the two country smash hit might also bring another history-setting feat for the country music genre at the 2024 Grammys.

Country Music in Grammys 2024

The 2024 Grammys or the 66th Annual Grammy Awards will be held next year on Feb. 4, 2024, provided that the ongoing SAG-AFTRA and WGA strike would not drag on by then.

However, the Grammy Nominations will be announced this August, as the eligibility period is nearing its eligibility deadline on September 2023.

According to Billboard, Wallen and Combs' "Last Night" and "Fast Car," respectively could be a shoo-in for the Grammy Award for Record of The Year nominees.

However, the publication noted that Combs' song might be more likely to be nominated than the other. This is because Combs has already received Grammy nominations, including Best New Artist, but has yet to win. The original song "Fast Car," by Tracy Chapman was similarly nominated for Record of the Year.

Meanwhile, Wallen, despite his huge music career strides in the past few years, has yet to earn his first Grammy nomination.

What Does The Double Country Nod Mean?

If Wallen and Combs manage to be nominated in the said category, this would be the first time in 46 years that two country songs would be vying for one of the top awards.

It was in 1977 when five country hits were nominated for Record of the Year - Crystal Gayle's "Don't It Make My Brown Eyes Blue," Linda Ronstadt's "Blue Bayou," and Debby Boone's "You Light Up My Life." Since then, no two country hits or more were nominated in the said category.

According to the publication, the past few years have been brutal to country music as very few have managed to be nominated.

Lil Nas X and Billy Ray Cyrus' "Old Town Road" in 2019, Taylor Swift's "We Are Never Ever Getting Back Together in 2012 and "You Belong With Me" in 2009, Lady A's "Need You Now" in 2010, and Shania Twain's "You're Still the One" in 1998 were only the country songs nominated for Record of the Year in the past 25 years.
