As previously reported, Flying Lotus has been working on new album for his Captain Murphy hip-hop side project but was forced to delay it because Kendrick Lamar has been holding on to his beats, and he's unsure whether those songs will go on Lamar's record.
However, you can get a taste of their collaboration today with the song "Never Catch Me" off Flying Lotus' upcoming album You're Dead!, due out October 7 via Warp Records.
As Consequence of Sound points out, the jazz undertones from Flying Lotus' previously released "Moment of Hesitation" are present once more on "Never Catch Me," but this time they are a bit more aggressive and fast-paced. The rapid drum fills play against a variety of other riffs for a manic sound that when paired with Lamar's flow feels like a verbal riot. "Buffalo soldiers at war, you shot fast but that ain't the final score," he spits.
You're Dead! is the follow-up to 2012's Until the Quiet Comes. The 19-track effort features collaborations with Herbie Hancock, ex-Dirty Projectors member Angel Deradoorian, Snoop Dogg, and Thundercat as well as Flying Lotus' hip-hop alter-ego Captain Murphy.
