BLACKPINK is one of the world's biggest KPOP groups, and they just earned a new milestone in their career, as well as set the bar once again for girl groups in the music industry.

The four-membered KPOP girl group won Group of the Year at the 2023 MTV Video Music Awards (VMAs), which makes them the second girl group to receive the award since TLC in 1999, Pop Base reported.

The group consists of Jennie, Lisa, Jisoo, and Rose, and they come from South Korea, where they made their debut in 2016; they quickly rose to prominence in the country before eventually branching out and gaining popularity worldwide.

KPOP is now one of the most prominent sub-genres of pop music and BLACKPINK, along with other MTV VMA nominees including BTS, TXT, and Stray Kids, are among the forerunners and trailblazers.

BLACKPINK Girl Group Trailblazers

According to the Recording Academy, girl groups have always been at the forefront of female expression, and have been the face of each generation.

From classic girl groups like the Supremes, Labelle, Destiny's Child, TLC, and the Andrew Sisters, these groups have paved the way for more current groups like BLACKPINK, Little Mix, Fifth Harmony, and more.

However, the prominence of BLACKPINK is definitely palpable today. Each member is famous in their own right, forging their path in the music industry, and breaking and setting records along the way.

BLACKPINK Albums, Tours

BLACKPINK was the first KPOP girl group to grace the stage of Coachella and break multiple Guinness World Records.

According to reports, they have over 2 billion streams on Spotify and boast the highest-grossing concert tour of all time by a girl group, which used to be a record set by the Spice Girls.

BLACKPINK was not able to attend the VMAs, however, they are one of the most celebrated artists right now. Fans all over the world are congratulating the girl group, and in fact, the words "BLACKPINK Group of the Year" are trending on X, formerly known as Twitter.

"Much deserved award," a fan wrote.

"'Born Pink' era: 3 VMAs, 'The Album' era: 1 VMA," another added, tallying the awards achieved during the group's previously released albums cycles.

"BLACKPINK is now the first ever KPOP girl group, and the second girl group in history to win group of the year at the MTV VMAs."
