The 1975's assertion that Matty Healy was eating a phone on stage during their Monday performance in Chicago confused many.

His 65-year-old mother, Denise Welch, laughed unfazedly about the singer's startling performance on X, the former name for Twitter.

Matty Healy, 34, looked like he was biting chunks out of a light blue phone when he was photographed standing on the edge of the stage.

Upon closer examination, though, it became clear that Matty was just eating a candy disguised as a cell phone.

The disguise was a thin chocolate sponge with a creamy white filling, encased in a pale blue fondant. "Matty Healy is eating a phone," was the caption that The 1975 put under a photo of the celebrity on X.

Fans were quick to point out that the cunning stunt was actually only a chocolate treat, even though it had received more than 620,000 views.

"The show is so weird tonight," a viewer commented. It's not raw steak, at least. It appears to be a Pop Tart.

Another wrote: "The exterior resembles some sort of fondant icing that was painted with edible paint to mimic the look of an iPhone, and the inside looks like cookies and crème." Denise, star of Loose Women, retweeted the photo with the comment, "Hope he didn't leave any," though it sounded like she was enjoying the joke. That's not how he was raised.

The band is currently on an American tour and is scheduled to perform live in the UK in February 2024. It happened only a few weeks after Matty, who faced backlash for his racist and misogynistic remarks, issued another public apologies for his controversial behavior.

The 1975 frontman caused a stir earlier this year when his dubious remarks reappeared when he started dating Taylor Swift. His startling remarks included the assertion that he liked to masturbate to footage of women "being brutalized" and derogatory remarks about the rapper Ice Spice. The performer has been talking about his remarks from previous tours.

Matty, who recently announced his band is going on a "indefinite hiatus," apologized once more during his band's performance at the Hollywood Bow. He said he had been trying to adopt the persona of a "21st century rock star."
