Billy Joel has owned the Madison Square Garden like it's his own home. Well, true enough, the Madison Square Garden has long considered the music icon as its own caretaker.
As Joel finalized his last string of concerts at the venue, capping off his residency, he reflected on the journey it has been for him and his team.
Billy Joel Ending His Madison Square Garden Residency
Speaking to People Magazine at the Long Island Music and Entertainment Hall of Fame (LIMEHOF), Billy Joel opened up about finishing his famed Madison Square Garden concert residency.
"After 10 years, we've done it. I mean, I didn't realize it would last 10 years," he pondered. "And I don't know how many shows it is, I'm sure somebody's keeping track of it somewhere, but I'm amazed that we went this far, and I'm honored."
For those who do not know, Billy Joel's Madison Square Garden Residency began in January 2014, making it a decade stint as he ends the concert residency in 2024 - after his 150th-lifetime show on July 25, 2024.
He has set multiple records in the concert venue. Among them was Most Consecutive Performances by Any Artist in 2006, a record he has since broken. When he played his 65th-lifetime performance in 2015, he earned the record for Most Lifetime Performances by An Artist.
As of February 2023, Billy Joel holds the record for the greatest number of appearances at the Madison Square Garden with 134 shows.
Raving about the venue, the "Piano Man" said "Madison Square Garden is the center of the universe as far as I'm concerned. It has the best acoustics, the best audiences, the best reputation, and the best history of great artists who have played there. It is the iconic, holy temple of rock and roll for most touring acts and, being a New Yorker, it holds a special significance to me."
