Cynthia Erivo has been considered one of the best performers and vocalists of today's generation. Her Tony Award-winning run on Broadway as Celie Johnson on "The Color Purple" catapulted her to mainstream success

Now, Erivo is breathing life into Elphaba on the first-ever movie adaptation of the musical "Wicked." As the teaser trailer for the highly-awaited film released on Super Bowl weekend, Erivo's vocals have been a talking point online because of the iconic "Defying Gravity" run she belted at the end of the trailer.

Fans Concerned Over Cynthia Erivo's 'Defying Gravity' Belt

When the "Wicked" trailer arrived, every theatre kid squealed in excitement to finally see the highly-anticipated movie musical onscreen.

But aside from the breathtaking production design, Jonathan Bailey's magnetic charisma, Michelle Yeoh's command, and Ariana Grande's show-stopping performance, many pointed out how amazing Cynthia Erivo looked in green.

The "Wicked" trailer gave everyone a sneak peek as to what fans could expect in the first part of "Wicked" which will hit theatres on Thanksgiving 2024.

However, many also showed concern about Erivo's "Defying Gravity" run at the end of the trailer.

"Trash run at the end by Cynthia Erivo, I know she can do better! What was that?" a fan commented on social media.

"The most confusing thing in any ad last night was this: Why would the people cutting the first Wicked trailer send it off with maybe the biggest money note in the whole show and demonstrating the girl they picked for Elphaba not only couldn't do it, but couldn't come close?" someone voiced out.

"Maybe it's bc I didn't hear the buildup to it but I did not like hearing how Cynthia Erivo hit the final Defying Gravity belt and I am surprised by this," another echoed.

However, not everyone is concerned about it. Many seemed to be excited about the fresh take that Erivo's rendition would bring to the story. Many have compared it to Idina Menzel's iconic final belt on the song.

"Cynthia Erivo is going to EAT her role as Elphaba! I can't wait to see her on the big screen!!!! I mean, her belt on the last part of the trailer snatched my wigggggg," a fan commented.

"My friend made it! Sitting with her watching it was so cool. Hearing Cynthia Erivo's voice was amazing," a fan shared on Reddit.
