The duo Simon & Garfunkel may have had a successful career during their prime years, but the public didn't know what exactly led to the fallout that caused a rift in Paul Simon and Art Garfunkel's relationship. More recently, the former has provided background on what happened behind closed doors.

In the documentary In Restless Dreams: The Music of Paul Simon, the singer opens up about the events that led to the duo's disbandment and the fallout of their friendship in 1970.

Simon recalled being good pals with Garfunkel from elementary school until their album Bridge over Troubled Water.

"[Afterwards], it didn't have the harmony of the friendship... that was broken," he said.

What Happened to Paul Simon, Art Garfunkel?

Simon recalled an incident that happened in 1967. At the time, the duo had just finished recording the score for the movie The Graduate, and Garfunkel was allowed to star as one of Catch-22's actors.

The singer said that at the time, Garfunkel told him he would do movies for six months, and then, when he returned, they would do an album featuring the songs that Simon had written.

However, Simon didn't like the idea and recalled telling his good pal: "'Actually, no. That's not gonna happen. I am not gonna do that.'"

Even before their final studio album, Simon said they already had an "uneven partnership," and the main reason behind their fallout was that he was the only one writing all of the songs and running all the sessions.

"Artie would be in the control room with [producer] Roy [Halee], and he'd say, 'Yeah, that's good, let's do that,' but it was an uneven balance of power," he added. (via People Magazine)

Paul Simon, Art Garfunkel Friendship Worsened

The outlet noted that Garfunkel was initially scheduled to film his movie for six weeks, but it was extended, which led to their fallout.

Paul Simon recalled telling his good pal to return, but he insisted on continuing filming the movie in Mexico. They argued over their projects, which the singer considered "a recipe for the breakup of Simon & Garfunkel."

By the end of the first part of the documentary, Simon said he considered his friendship with Garfunkel a good one.

Although their friendship ended back then, they still reunited on a few occasions over the succeeding decades. In 2003, the pair went on The Old Friends tour across the United States.

They also had tours in Asia and Australia in July 2009.
