Calling all fans of the legendary Prince! A musical movie is reportedly in the works and will revolve around the late musician's biggest hits.

According to The InSneider, it has been described as a "jukebox musical film." The yet-to-be-titled movie will be directed by Ryan Coogler. Universal Pictures and Proximity Media back the project.

The outlet noted that the project has been in the works since 2018. Uproxx reported that one probable reason the movie was delayed was the estate's contention about which entities could license his likeness.

However, the estate apparently had a change of heart and it has given the greenlight to releas never-before-heard tracks and collector's editions of Prince's work.

As of this writing, complete details about the movie, such as release date, cast members, and more, have yet to be announced.

Ava DuVernay Initially Worked on a Documentary About Prince

In 2018, Variety reported that famed producer/director Ava Duvernay on tap to work with Netflix to produce a documentary about Prince's life.

The project reportedly received an OK from the legend's estate, and they were said to have cooperated on the project as they provided archival footage, previous interviews, photos, and more. 

"The only way I know how to make this film is with love. And with great care. I'm honored to do so and grateful for the opportunity entrusted to me by the estate," DuVernay shared on social media at the time.

Unfortunately, The Playlist reported in 2019 that the multi-part documentary was sheelved. The director revealed in an interview with The Los Angeles Times that things didn't work out for both parties, citing "creative differences."

"It just didn't work out... There's a lot of beautiful material there. I wish them well," she said at the time.

What Happened to Prince?

Prince passed away on April 21, 2016; he was 57. USA Today reported that the musician was alone and unresponsive in an elevator. At the time, he was staying at this Paisley Park studio compound.

His death was mourned not only by fans but also by many celebrities and musicians that he inspired.
