Zayn Malik After One Direction, Disclosing Crippling Anxiety

Zayn Malik was able to amass his own fanbase after exiting One Direction in March 2015.

Even though there rumors circulating of bad blood between him and the rest of the band members, the singer refuted such allegations.

One Direction also revealed in a statement that Malik only wished to live like a "normal 22-year-old who is able to relax and have some private time out of the spotlight."

In 2016, Malik was scheduled to perform solo at Capital's Summertime Ball but canceled just before he was supposed to take the stage.

Zayn apologized lengthily on his social media at the time, making the revelation that he's suffering from serious anxiety.

He wrote, "Unfortunately, my anxiety that has haunted me throughout the last few months around live performances has gotten the better of me. With the magnitude of the event, I have suffered the worst anxiety of my career. I cannot apologise enough. I promise I will do my best to make this up to everybody I've let down today."

After this cancellation, he was still able to play a short set at the Wango Tango festival. On the same year, he was able to sing on The Voice USA.

In 2017 however, he again cancelled several scheduled shows, this time in Japan, citing once more his anxiety as the main reason.

Thereafter, he stayed out of the limelight.

He did however, release a book titled "Zayn," in which he detailed what pushed him go public with his anxiety.

An excerpt from the said book also revealed how surprised he was that he is not alone in dealing with this condition.

"After I put out that statement I was blown away by just how many people got in contact, and how many people suffer from anxiety. It's so common, and that's not surprising, really," one excerpt read.
