Our natural reaction to someone else's massive success is to be bitter and assume the worst about their product ("haters gonna hate") but Taylor Swift is making things difficult for us. The star announced October 29 that all of the proceeds from her single "Welcome to New York" will be donated to the New York City public school system, according to NME

"The inspiration that I found in that city is kind of hard to describe and hard to compare to any other force of inspiration I've ever experienced in my life," she said on The View. "It's like an electric city. I approached moving there with such wide-eyed optimism and sort of saw it as a place of endless potential and possibilities and you can kind of hear that reflected in this music and this first song especially."

Most musicians make their livings from live gigs but Swift can probably afford to cut into her music sales earnings for the good cause. "Welcome to New York" went to no. 1 on iTunes last week upon its release, although so far its "only" gotten as high as no. 5 on the Billboard Digital Downloads charts, selling 84,000 downloads. That's a pittance in comparison to "Shake It Off," which has already sold more than 2 million copies, and album 1989 is currently projected to finish its first sales week with 1.2 million copies moved.

New York has already opened up its arms to Swift, naming her the official Welcome Ambassador for the tourism department. The pop star certainly isn't ungrateful.
