New Orleans native Trombone Shorty joined new pals Foo Fighters onstage recently in the Big Easy to spice up the band's 1995 debut single "This is a Call."

"Now when we were here a couple months ago," Dave Grohl says in the video below, via Consequence of Sound, referring to the band's visit for their HBO series Sonic Highways, "we came here and we recorded a song on our new record. We did it down at Preservation Hall. And then one night we thought, 'You know what? Open up the doors and let's just play for the people on the street and see what happens."

Grohl goes on to explain that he met a new friend that week who happened to be at the impromptu show — Trombone Shorty, aka Troy Andrews. Shorty joined the band for that performance at Preservation Hall, which will air Nov. 21 during the sixth episode of the series. The trombonist then accompanied Grohl and co. onstage and soloed for about two and a half minutes before the band finished off the tune.

"That's f**king badass," the singer says after Shorty exits the stage. "The way I look at it, after about 20 years, you gotta do what feels right at the time and you gotta do the shit that you're going to remember for the rest of your life. And that's what just happened right there now with Troy."

The Foos are apparently making their way back through some of their Sonic Highway cities because the band also brought out Zac Brown last week during their Ryman Auditorium gig in Nashville, where they also stopped for the documentary series.
