Georgia psych-pop crew Of Montreal have shared a new track titled "Empyrean Abattoir" from their upcoming album Aureate Gloom, which you can check out below. The song is one of the best things Of Montreal have put out in years, starting with a vaguely mournful disco/post-punk groove but eventually shifting into a snottier punk jam, reminiscent of David Bowie's early 1970s work, such as "Queen Bitch." Frontman Kevin Barnes has said that Aureate Gloom was inspired by the "mid-to-late-'70s music scene in New York," and based on this song he is not messing around.

"Emyprean Abattoir" is the second song to be shared from Aureate Gloom, following "Bassem Sabry" from early December. Aureate Gloom is set for release March 3 through Polyvinyl and will be Of Montreal's 13th studio album overall, their first since 2013's Lousy with Sylvianbriar.

"I felt very inspired by the mid-to-late-'70s scene in New York — you know, Max's Kansas City, early days of CBGB and Television, Talking Heads," Kevin Barnes told Stereogum of his writing process behind Aureate Gloom. "I went to New York and just lived out there for two weeks and wrote some songs and kind of just wandered around, similar to what I did when I was on the San Francisco tour for Lousy with Sylvianbriar. The new abum is sort of along those lines — not a complete homage to those bands or anything, but that was kind of the spirit behind it."

Of Montreal is setting off on a brief tour of the South next week, which will kick off in Tallahassee, Florida, Jan. 13 and finish Jan. 24 in Chattanooga, Tennessee. You can check out their complete tour dates here.
