After months of waiting, Stephen Colbert's version of The Late Show finally has a premiere date. Today (Jan. 12), CBS announced that the comedian/actor will finally take over for David Letterman beginning this September.

So, hold on, Colbert Nation, it's going to be a minute.

According to Mashable, The Late Show with Stephen Colbert will premiere on Sept. 8.

That's going to mean that there will be a lengthy wait between editions of The Late Show. Letterman's version of the show is set to have its finale on May 20.

Colbert's previous show, The Colbert Report closed its 10-year run back in December, meaning fans of the funnyman will have to wait three-fourths of a year for Colbert to finally return to TV screens.

"I have nine months to make a show, just like a baby. So first, I should find out how you make a baby," Colbert said in a statement.

Before Colbert takes the reins over at The Late Show, CBS is planning some Letterman reflections, though the network has yet to fully figure out how it's going to pay tribute to its longtime king of late night.

Information about Colbert's inevitable late night band has yet to be revealed, but the comedian is a noted music lover.

During the finale of The Colbert Report, his character cheated death and said "see ya later" to his fans with a loving tribute of "We'll Meet Again," featuring performances from Michael Stipe, Randy Newman and a slew of other celebrities.
