It's been a whirlwind year for Idina Menzel. The Broadway actress broke into the mainstream spotlight thanks to the smash hit Disney film Frozen and her surprise top 10 hit from the soundtrack, "Let It Go." To cap off a 12 months that included a performance at the Oscars, a Christmas album, a Grammy nomination and a planned world tour, the If/Then actress was on hand for a big honor tonight (Feb. 1): to perform "The Star-Spangled Banner" at Super Bowl XLIX.

Ahead of the New England Patriots-Seattle Seahawks game, Menzel performed in front of each team, gathered together in patriotism.

Wearing simple black slacks and a layered black top, Menzel redeemed herself from a less-than-stellar showing at New Year's Rocking Eve. Instead of reaching far too high for notes, Menzel kept her performance strong and subdued, building from the beginning of the song toward an epic finale.

Like the best of all National Anthem performances, Menzel didn't go too crazy with the runs, keeping the song as it was meant to be: short, simple and strong.

As Menzel sang, strong and sturdy, patriotic images flashed across the screen, with planes and soldiers giving an extra dose of U-S-A.

Play ball, indeed.

Of course, Menzel wasn't the only one on hand to perform at the Super Bowl tonight. John Legend was also on hand to perform "America The Beautiful" and Katy Perry will take on the much coveted halftime show alongside Missy Elliott and Lenny Kravitz.
