Cynthia Lennon, the first wife of legendary Beatles member John Lennon and mother to Julian Lennon has passed away at the age of 75. Today (April 1), Julian made the heartbreaking announcement on his website, alongside a new memorial to his beloved mother.

According to the memorial website, Lennon (née Cynthia Powell) passed away at her home in Mallorca, Spain, after a "short but brave battle with cancer." Her son, Julian, was at her bedside at the time of her death and final days.

The family has requested privacy during this difficult time.

Born in Lancashire, England, in 1939, Cynthia is best known for being John Lennon's first wife. The college sweethearts married in 1962, right before the Beatles hit the big time in the U.K., and after she discovered she was pregnant with the couple's only child Julian.

Cynthia and John were married for a short six years, divorcing in 1968 after John admitted to cheating on her with numerous women, including his eventual second wife Yoko Ono. She penned a 2005 memoir John about her time with him and marriage, including the fallout from his shocking 1980 death.

Cynthia raised Julian largely without support from John, though Paul McCartney was involved in her life. She eventually married three more times, to Roberto Bassanini in 1970, John Twist in 1976 and Noel Charles in 2002 until his eventual death in 2013.

Cynthia is survived by her only child, Julian, who released a loving musical tribute to his mother upon the news of her death.
