Thurston Moore has taken much of the heat for the breakup of alternative rock icon Sonic Youth, but there's no word yet on who's to blame for the breakup of his most recent band: American black metal outfit Twilight.

The bad news first, for black metal fans: Indeed, Twilight is no more. The group was a supergroup for the subgenre of black metal, featuring Stavros Giannopoulos of Atlas Moth, Wrest of Leviathan, N. Imperial of Krieg, all of whom shared vocal responsibilities as well as playing instruments. Moore, not at all from a black metal background, joined the group during 2012.

"We're not coming together to make music," Moore said. "We're joining forces to destroy all rational thought."

The good news is that the band did manage to make some music prior to the split. It was announced at the same time as the breakup news, that Twilight's third album-III: Beneath Trident's Tomb-would be released on March 17. Moore was not with the band for its previous two releases, Twilight and Monument to Time End. Although credits have not been listed for the new album yet, we're assuming that Moore did not contribute any shrieks or rasps on the vocal front.

The band released the first of six tracks from the album...an uplifting number titled "Lungs." Opening with a flurry of feedback, the track begins to lumber along a heavy riff for four minutes. Death rasps are echoed by a man yelling hopelessly in the background. All in all, pretty good black metal.
