You've heard My Little Pony: Friendship Is Magic's Apple Bloom, Scootaloo and Sweetie Belle (a.k.a., the Cutie Mark Crusaders) sing about their quest to get their special mark on their blank flanks, but until now you haven't heard the foals quite like this. Ahead of the release of the first official MLP EDM album DJ Pon-3 Presents: My Little Pony Friendship Is Magic Remixed, Music Times has an exclusive premiere of Heavygrinder's take on "Cutie Mark Crusaders."
"The song 'Cutie Mark Crusaders' had this energetic feel that instantly got our attention. It didn't take long for remix ideas to start popping up and, soon enough, we began hammering it down in the studio," Heavygrinder's Bobbie Merveille said. "Our sound is by nature very powerful and energetic, so we tried to convey that on this remix as well. It was interesting to work the original stems into our track since they clashed a bit, but in the end we couldn't be happier with the result."
That result turned in to a brand new take on "Cutie Mark Crusaders." the chaotic, rushing and dramatic feel of the original "Cutie Mark Crusaders" song is retained in Heavygrinder's remix. The '80s-style guitars are replaced by a rush of drums, and Scootaloo's well-intentioned vocals are given just the right amount of tuning to make the song less laughable.
Heavygrinder's remix helps to bridge the world between Friendship Is Magic's intended 9- to- 12-year-old female demographic and the adult male fans (typically called bronies). "Cutie Mark Crusaders" as an official remix could easily be danced to at a little girls' sleepover or at the club.
"[This album] shows that it doesn't matter; EDM doesn't really have an age limit. It's not like oh no only grown-ups can listen to that, that's adult music," Friendship is Magic Remixed producer Justin Lassen said. "It's like a lot of times kids don't want to listen to Bruce Springsteen or adult contemporary because that really is kind of grownup music. But with the accessibility of EDM, 5-year-olds can dance to it. It's just dance music."
