Left Coast indie label Burger Records announced the line up for its second annual all-female-fronted music festival Burger-A-Go-Go earlier this week. Scheduled for September 5th, the now annual event is set to take place at Santa Anna Observatory, featuring well-loved acts like Bleached, Cults as well as riot grrrl legend Kathleen Hanna's band The Julie Ruin.
For many, Burger-A-Go-Go, since its inception in 2014, has been a godsend. As NME notes, "the festival can be seen as a response to the male-heavy line-ups of many major music festivals." Perhaps the first of many, Burger Records' intentionally female focused fest will undoubtedly (and thankfully) alter the overall average ratio of female-fronted to male-fronted of acts billed. Burger-A-Go-Go decreases the gender gap while challenging sexism in the music industry in the most punk way possible: via pure rock 'n roll.
As the demand to eradicate the outddated and sexist idea that rock is a "boys only" club increases, Burger Records' current efforts are living proof that fostering inclusion and diversity in festival line-ups isn't as difficult as some might imagine.
Much like last year's inaugural line up which featured garage greats like Shannon and the Clams, The Dum Dum Girls, and Best Coast—this year's bill is jam-packed with pivotal performers and well-loved favorites. From established greats like Kim Gordon (who will be performing with her new band Glitterbuster) and Cat Power's Chan Marshall to newer outfits like the Death Valley Girls and Slop Bop Records' The Flytraps, this fall's lineup is undeniably well worth the price of admission. Between its all-female fronted bill and this weekend's Buger Boogaloo (hosted by the iconic "Pope of Trash" John Waters), it is clear that Burger Records is well on its way to becoming legendary.
