In a new interview with Fortune Magazine, Lucasfilm President and Star Wars: The Force Awakens producer Kathleen Kennedy revealed that her team and Disney are hoping to attract female directors to the Star Wars movies of the future. With this in mind, we're sharing a short list of our top three current female filmmakers that we would love to see take on the Galaxy Far, Far Away!

If you've been following the new Star Wars projects, you know that two women lead both films that have already started production. Daisy Ridley, a relatively unknown British actress is leading J.J. Abrams' Episode VII, and Academy Award nominee Felicity Jones is quite literally leading the rest of her cast in the spin-off, Anthology standalone heist film, Rogue One. In other words, women play a large role in the Star Wars universe, so they should absolutely be in charge of the actual productions, don't you think?

"It is going to happen. We are going to hire a woman who's going to direct a Star Wars movie. I have no doubt," the film executive told Fortune. "On the other hand, I want to make sure we put someone in that position who's set up for success. It's not just a token job to look out and try to find a woman that we could put into a position of directing Star Wars... If we do want to bring a woman in to direct a Star Wars movie, we want to make sure that it's somebody who's passionate and really, really wants to do a Star Wars movie. We don't want to talk somebody into it."

The most obvious choice is Kathryn Bigelow. Her acclaimed films include Zero Dark Thirty and The Hurt Locker, which are great, dramatic movies about war - a huge theme in the Star Wars franchise. Plus, she's handled action and sci-fi in other films. She's a huge name and having her involved in Star Wars is a no-brainer.

I cannot for the life of me understand why director Ava DuVernay isn't being offered more films! Selma was an underappreciated masterpiece and she could add a lot to an already impressive franchise.

Sophia Coppola. Now, before you jump down my throat, she's easily one of the most artistic directors out there, and a standalone film could go in any direction. Imagine her taking on sci-fi drama!
