Falling in love is fun, but no one said it would be easy. During a recent interview with Men's Fitness, actor Liam Hemsworth opened up about his high profile relationship with actress and singer, Miley Cyrus. Deeming their love "real," The Hunger Games star reflected on his feelings towards his ex-fiancé, how the relationship affected him, and explained why he has no interest in dating right now.
The 25-year-old Australian actor began dating the "Wrecking Ball" singer in 2009, after meeting on set of the romantic film The Last Song. After a few bumps in the road and taking some time a part from each other, the two became engaged in 2012. At the time of the proposal, Hemsworth was 23 years old, while Cyrus was just 19 years old.
Despite mutually calling off their engagement in 2013, Hemsworth revealed he has no regrets regarding his ill-fated relationship with Cyrus. The youngest of the Hemsworth brothers admitted his feelings towards the controversial artist still remain the same.
"You fall in love with who you fall in love with; you can never choose," Hemsworth told Men's Fitness for their November issue. "I guess some people just come with a little more baggage. [Laughs.] I mean, look—we were together five years, so I don’t think those feelings will ever change. And that’s good because that proves to me that it was real."
"It wasn’t just a fling. It really was an important part of my life and always will be. She’s a free spirit. I think she’ll always surprise people with what she does, but she’s not a malicious person in any way," he said. "She’s a young girl who wants to do what she wants to do."
The breakup took place around the time Cyrus began to shed her "good girl" Disney image. While Hemsworth cut ties with Cyrus immediately after the breakup and the singer moved on to five-month relationship with Patrick Schwarzenegger, the two have reportedly managed to salvage their friendship and still keep in contact with each other.
Cyrus also spoke candidly about her ex in the October 2015 issue of Elle UK, stating the two still have love for each other and still posses a very close bond.
As for getting back out into the dating scene, Hemsworth isn't really focused on that aspect of his life right now. According to the interview, his busy traveling schedule and lack of interest in clubs, Hemsworth barely ever has the chance to meet new people. At the moment, he's putting all of his energy into his work.
"It’s tough to have a relationship in this industry, though not to the point where it makes me depressed," the actor revealed. "I’m constantly working, and I love working. I don’t feel like I’m missing out on anything at this point—I feel like I’m focusing on the right things and prioritizing things in the right way, and I’m a healthy, happy person."
