Sam Smith is just like you. Beyond the fame, the fortune, the hit singles and the Grammy awards, the "Writing's on the Wall" singer is just another big fan of Downton Abbey. Unlike you, however, Smith had the chance to meet the Royal Family, and his love of the popular monarchy drama may have cause him to have a little gaffe.

Smith dished on his time meeting Prince William and his family on The Tonight Show Starring Jimmy Fallon on Wednesday (Nov. 11) and said that he may have had a little too much influence from another time period.

Smith laughed when Jimmy Fallon even brought up his encounter with the royals, and then revealed that he went a little overboard with the formality of the occasion.

"My issue is that I watch way too much Downton Abbey, and you get instructions, right? They say you have to bow with one arm behind your back. If someone tells you to bow, right, I properly went for it. I bowed," Smith said.

And while most people go for a subtle bow of the head, Smith went for a "full right angle," and in the photograph of himself meeting Prince William, you can see the prince and his handler having a bit of a laugh at Smith's expense.

Smith was on The Tonight Show to promote the re-release of his debut album, repackaged as In The Lonely Hour - Drowning Shadows Edition. The extended LP features a selection of new songs from Smith, including the heartbreaking title track "Drowning Shadows." In the Lonely Hour - Drowning Shadows Edition was released on Nov. 6.
